Sentinel water treatment products have been found helping to ensure heating systems retain their optimum operational performance in some interesting places but few would compare with the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge – one of the world’s most beautiful and amazing hotels.

Darren Stratton from Stratton Mechanical and Plumbing in Coventry was approached via a business associate, to advise the hotel on heating and hot water issues they were experiencing and this resulted last July in Darren making a trip to Tanzania to see the hotel and its issues for himself. Following the production of a report for the owners of the hotel, Darren has now been asked to formulate a plan of works and to cost the necessary repairs and activities to get things working smoothly on the very edge of the Ngorongoro Crater!

The Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge has been regularly voted one of the best hotels in the world. This unique lodge clings to the rim of the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, the largest and most perfect volcanic crater on Earth. Long and low, the lodge is built from local river stone and camouflaged with indigenous vines. Designed to blend completely into the landscape, it is entirely invisible from the floor of the crater, 600 metres below. 

Deep within the crater, enclosed by towering walls, some 25,000 large mammals wander the plains, lakes and forests of ‘the land that time forgot', dominated by enormous bull elephants, rhinos and lions. Hugging the contours of the jagged Crater rim, the Lodge takes its inspiration from the so-called ‘Cradle of Mankind', the prehistoric site of Olduvai Gorge, which lies close by.  “It’s an amazing hotel and the setting is unique and staggeringly beautiful,” says Darren, “ but it’s interesting that pretty much wherever you build a building in the world, and however beautiful the setting, the chances are you’ll need a heating system and that system will have issues that need addressing! In this instance its clear that the heating system needs help to stop corrosion and Sentinel seemed the obvious answer to me. We need to clean the system and then inhibit it to protect it from corrosion in the future. We’re putting together a package of materials we need out there and Sentinel’s David Webster was kind enough to respond rapidly when I needed to know the dimensions of the packaging for Sentinel products so we could get everything into a container to ship it out.”
